WVU's Women's Studies Center to sponsor events this fall

West Virginia University’s Center for Women’s Studies will be host of numerous events this fall, including a popular Fireside Chat lecture series, a reception for new women faculty and a Women’s Studies residency.

"This fall’s activities will be exciting," said Barbara Howe, director of the Center. "We are especially looking forward to our first Fireside Chat by Ancella Bickley, retired vice president for academic affairs from West Virginia State College."

Later this fall, Dr. Howe said, Marilou Awiakta, a Cherokee-Appalachian poet, storyteller and essayist, will be on campus talking to classes and giving lectures as part of the center’s women’s studies’ residency program.

"We also plan a reception for our new women faculty member and hope many from the University and local community will attend to meet them and welcome them to WVU," Howe said.

Activities include:

  • The West Virginia Women’s Studies Faculty and Student Network meeting, Sept. 8, Days Inn, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Flatwoods, WV
  • A memorial service for former WVU Law Professor Ann Maxey, 7:30 p.m., Sept. 15, Creative Arts Center Concert Theatre
  • Fireside Chat with Ancella Bickley, 7:30-9:0 p.m., Sept. 20, National Research Center for Coal and Energy
  • New women faculty reception, Sept. 13, WVU Center for Women’s Studies. Time to be announced
  • Women’s Studies Research Committee poster presentation, Mountainlair. Time to be announced
  • Foreign Languages Colloquium: Modern Literature and Film. Co-sponsored by the WVU Center for Women’s Studies. Sy Montgomery, author of Walking with the Apes, will speak on women’s roles as scientists, 7:30 -10 p.m., Sept. 28, Mountainlair ballrooms
  • Fireside Chat, Elizabeth Engelhardt, assistant professor of women’s studies, will present Beating the Biscuits in Appalachia: Race, Class, and Gender Politics of Women Baking Bread, 4-5:30 p.m., Oct. 11
  • Women’s Studies Residency in Honor of Judith Gold Stitzel, Marilou Awiakta, Oct. 15-17. Times and locations to be announced
  • West Virginia Women’s Commission Town Meeting, 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Oct. 27, Lakeview Resort and Conference Center
