WVU's India Association collecting money for earthquake relief efforts

West Virginia University’s India Association will begin collecting money today (Wednesday) to aid relief efforts in the western Indian state of Gujarat, which was struck Friday with a magnitude 7.9 earthquake. Donations will be accepted today, tomorrow and Friday, Jan. 31 - Feb. 2, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the India Association’s booth in the Mountainlair Commons.

According to Karen Bird, student program advisor in the Office of International Students and Scholars, WVU has at least 300 students from India, several of whom are from the state of Gujarat and are waiting to hear from their family members.

"They can’t find out anything because there is simply no communication with that area right now," she said.
