Film on the life and times of Shirley Chisolm to be shown Monday at WVU
Screening part of Women’s Studies “Movie Night” series …
The Center for Women's Studies in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University, along with the Center for Black Culture and Research, the Morgantown chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and the Feminist Equality Movement (FEM) will show “Chisholm '72: Unbought and Unbossed” on Monday, Feb. 13, as part of its “Movie Nights” series.
The film will be screened at 7:30 p.m. in G-21 White Hall. A discussion moderated by WVU associate professor of history Dr. Katherine Bankole will follow.
The movie is the first historical documentary on Brooklyn congresswoman Shirley Chisholm and her campaign to become the Democratic Party's presidential nominee in 1972.
Shunned by the political establishment, the black lawmaker asked people of color, feminists and young voters for their support to “Reshape our society and take control of our destiny as we go down the ‘ Chisholm Trail ' in 1972.”
This is the second of four movie nights sponsored by the Center for Women's Studies this semester. Upcoming movies include “Speaking Our Peace” on March 6 and “Lesbian Grandmothers from Mars: One Couple's Journey for Marriage Equality” on April 3.
