WVU cancer specialists endorse current mammogram standard

Women in their 40s nationwide are questioning whether they should avoid getting mammograms to screen for breast cancer now that a government panel of doctors and scientists has said the tests in younger women don?t improve women's survival rates. But cancer doctors at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center at West Virginia University say they are advising women not to wait until age 50 to seek their first mammograms. Despite the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendation that women age 40 to 50 do without screening mammography, others see lifesaving benefits in the screening.

WVU professors: Health-care reform should start with better health literacy

The health-care reform debate rages and, amid all the bluster and political posturing, sometimes a crucial element is lost -- facts. Two marketing professors in West Virginia University's College of Business and Economics have published an article in The Journal of Consumer Affairs that gives the United States low marks for health literacy and places the blame on poor approaches to communications.

New text by WVU professor looks at economics of tourism

Ever wonder why you pay one price for an airline ticket, while the person next to you paid hundreds more? Or less? Or why the ticket price changed in the five minutes it took you to decide to buy it? West Virginia University Economics Professor William Reece can explain it, and has written a newly published textbook to help teach high-level economics students about that and the other ins-and-outs of the $800-billion-a-year industry from an economics viewpoint.
