West Virginia cattle farmers can expand their knowledge of the current beef market through the West Virginia University Extension Service’s Mountaineer Cattlemen’s College – a conference that equips producers for success through education and networking with industry leaders and each other.

The event takes place Friday, Dec. 2 through Saturday, Dec. 3, with social events taking place on Friday and educational programming taking place on Saturday. Cost is $85.

The Cattlemen’s College is designed to be convenient for everyone and is held in a central location – Stonewall Resort in Roanoke.

According to organizers, the conference builds on last year’s success in replacing the annual beef short course.

Kevin Shaffer, WVU Extension Service livestock production specialist, said that similar to last year, attendants can expect to interact and learn from multiple, experienced, experts from West Virginia University, Iowa State University, the WVU Extension Service and others.

“Beef is a cornerstone for West Virginia’s agricultural economy and a lot of farms and families depend on increasing their bottom line by keeping up-to-date with production trends,” said Shaffer. “Cattlemen, and cattlewomen, will not only receive first-hand insight from the speakers, but also from their peers through networking.”

In addition to the general session, there will be three breakout sessions to choose from Saturday afternoon. The options allow producers to pick a session that meets their needs, such as risk management, forage quality or financial health.

The WVU Extension Service serves as an outreach division of West Virginia University. Extension has offices in all 55 counties, which provide citizens with knowledge in areas such as 4-H and youth development, agriculture, family and consumer sciences, health, leadership development and community and economic development.
