The West Virginia University Palmetto Chapter of Alumni and Friends has awarded its first scholarship to a graduate student in WVU’s College of Business and Economics.

Daniel Moscar of Hilton Head, South Carolina is pursuing a degree in the executive Master of Business Administration program at WVU. He graduated from Walden University in 2015 with a degree in business administration, and is currently employed by the Heritage Golf Group serving as the general manager of Oyster Reef Golf Club and Palmetto Hall Plantation Club.

“I was extremely surprised and very grateful for the scholarship,” Moscar said. “I can’t thank the chapter enough.”

The Palmetto Chapter scholarship is a $1,000 award that benefits a student from Beaufort or Jasper counties who meets WVU’s guidelines for satisfactory academic progress.

The WVU Palmetto Chapter was founded in spring 2015 by a group of WVU alumni and friends interested in building a network for Mountaineers living in the Beaufort and Jasper county areas of South Carolina. Since then, the chapter has grown to more than 200 members.

The chapter coordinates a variety of social and networking events. In April, the chapter hosted a luncheon at Sea Pines Resort for WVU President E. Gordon Gee and Vice President of the WVU Alumni Association Sean Frisbee. In February, WVU Athletic Director Shane Lyons visited Hilton Head for a reception.

The chapter is also involved in service and community work, making donations to the Deep Well Project on Hilton Head Island and to flood victims in West Virginia.

The official game watch location for WVU football and basketball games is Callahan’s Sports Bar & Grill located on New Orleans Road, Hilton Head Island. WVU fans living in the area and visitors to the island are encouraged to attend these events.

Anyone interested in joining the chapter may visit www.palmettoeers.com for more information.

The WVU Alumni Association has more than 100 chapters in 29 states nationwide. The chapters serve as excellent opportunities for alumni to keep in touch with other alumni, serve chapter communities, and recruit students to attend WVU.

The establishment of the Palmetto Chapter WVU Alumni and Friends Scholarship was made in conjunction with A State of Minds: The Campaign for West Virginia’s University. The fundraising effort by the WVU Foundation on behalf of the University runs through December 2017.
