Susan S. Brewer, an attorney for more than 36 years with Steptoe & Johnson PLLC, has been elected chairperson of the West Virginia University Foundation Board of Directors.

A resident of Morgantown, she has been serving as CEO of the firm since January 2009, and focuses her practice in the area of litigation, with a particular concentration on professional liability. Her firm has more than 300 lawyers in six states.

Brewer received her legal education at George Mason University School of Law and her undergraduate education at Duke University. Her husband, Bill, also an attorney, holds two undergraduate degrees from WVU in biology (‘76) and accounting (‘77). She was first elected to the WVU Foundation Board of Directors in 2010.

Brewer takes over for Gary R. Pell (‘73) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, who served the past two years as chairman.

“I want to thank Gary for his steadfast leadership and service. He has been fantastic to work with and his mentorship and wisdom have been remarkable,” said Foundation President and CEO Cindi Roth. “I know Susan will do an equally great job as chair and am excited to work with her.”

Robert O. “Bob” Orders of Charleston was elected vice-chair. He is CEO of Orders Construction Company, Inc., a highway, utility and industrial construction company with operations in West Virginia and Virginia. Orders is a 1972 graduate of WVU with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, and has been a member of the Foundation Board of Directors since 2011. His wife, Ann, also graduated from WVU’s College of Education and Human Services in 1972.

Marcia A. Broughton (‘76, ‘79) of Clarksburg was re-elected secretary while James H. Chamberlain (‘69) of Thousand Oaks, California will serve as assistant secretary.

Each of the officers will serve a one-year term.

The WVU Foundation, an independent not-for-profit corporation, was chartered in 1954. Its mission is to enrich the lives of those touched by West Virginia University by maximizing private charitable support and providing services to the University and its affiliated organizations.
