Six West Virginia University students, all members of the Honors College, returned home last week after spending seven days in the Netherlands for The European International Model United Nations Conference (TEIMUN).

More than 200 of the brightest university students from around the world gathered in The Hague from July 11-17 for the annual conference to engage in discussions about the world’s most pressing issues, such as the current refugee crisis, global warming and extremist terrorism and to develop as young leaders and global citizens.

Lauren Griffin, a junior international studies and history major minoring in German, geography and religious studies from Franklin, TN, was named the distinguished delegate in the Humans Rights Council and Margaret Budik, sophomore international studies major minoring in Russian studies, French, linguistics and economics from Weirton, West Virginia, received an honorable mention award in the European Council.

Erin Heater, a 2015 student delegate, member of the 2016 TEIMUN Human Rights Council, and sophomore international relations student, was selected to chair next year’s General Assembly and Griffin will chair the Human Rights Council.

Clara Haizlett, Wellsburg, West Virginia; Emma Harrison, Morgantown; Lauren Headley, Myersville, MD; and Samantha Teets, Ashland, VA, were also a part of the 6-member delegation who traveled to Europe.
