A senior executive with over 38 years of experience in health fundraising and executive management has been chosen as the new associate vice president of health sciences development for the West Virginia University Foundation. George J. Omiros began his new position June 1, WVU Foundation Senior Vice President for Development and Chief Development Officer Bernard J. “B.J.” Davisson announced.
“I am thrilled that George has joined our WVU Foundation team,” Davisson said. “He brings a wealth of talent and diverse experience in all facets of philanthropic endeavors and donor and volunteer engagement. His depth of knowledge in healthcare development will really help us grow in key areas of patient care and research fundraising. I am confident George will provide the leadership necessary to dramatically enhance the success of fundraising across WVU Health Sciences.”
Omiros said. “I have been enormously impressed with the key volunteers and staff members I have met. Their passion for the WVU mission and dedication for the institution is amazing for the impressive success that the Foundation has achieved.”
Omiros is an accomplished development professional, having recently served as a consultant to national and local non-profits. For 27 years he served the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, most recently as national executive vice president, chief campaign and field development officer. In that role, he provided strategic direction for fundraising, field organization and board development across North America. Earlier in his career, Omiros served as the executive vice president of the American Heart Association of Western Pennsylvania.
A life-long resident of Uniontown, Pa., Omiros earned his bachelor’s degrees in political science and philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh and pursued a master’s degree in non-profit management at Central Michigan University. He is a Certified Association Executive and a Certified Fund Raising Executive having been honored as the 1990 Outstanding Fundraising Executive by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). He is a founding member of the AFP Chapter in Pittsburgh and served several years on its national board.
George and his wife, Sophia, look forward to joining the Mountaineer community. They are the parents of two children, Christopher Omiros of Pittsburgh and Alicia H. McCloskey of Belle Vernon, Pa.
The WVU Foundation is currently conducting the largest capital campaign in the history of the University. “A State of Minds: The Campaign for West Virginia’s University state of minds campaign” has raised $953 million through March 31, 2016, toward its $1 billion goal. The Campaign runs through December 2017.
