The�School of Social Work the�School of Public Health at �West Virginia University will host the 38th Summer Institute on Aging, June 7-9, at the Lakeview Resort and Conference Center in Morgantown.

The theme for this year’s conference is “Living Better. Living Longer. Living Life.”

Bernard G. Schreurs, Ph.D., director of the West Virginia Alzheimer ’s Disease
Registry and professor in the WVU Blanchette Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, will kick off the conference with his talk, “Living Better and Longer in the Face of Alzheimer’s Disease.” The presentation is sponsored by the Beatrice Ruth Burgess Center for West Virginia Families and Communities.

Conference workshops will include, but are not limited to, key topics such as: “A How-To of Practical Evidenced-Based Strategies for Living Better, Living Longer, Living Life,” “All for One: Fighting Financial Exploitation Together,” and “Seeing Alzheimer’s Through a Son’s Eyes.”

“Participants at the Summer Institute on Aging consistently comment about the quality and variety of important topics that are offered each year,” said Jacki Englehardt, professional and community education director in the WVU School of Social Work.

Social workers need to be well-connected to resources within the community, and the SIOA serves to build up their toolkit of skills and knowledge regarding emerging techniques, regulations and services.

“The SIOA is one of the only conferences in West Virginia that focuses solely on older adults and thus has become a cornerstone and a much valued service to those that serve our elders,” said Englehardt.

The conference has been approved for a maximum of 19.75 continuing education contact hours for licensed social workers in West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Social workers from other states should contact their respective licensure boards regarding approval prior to registering for the conference.

The 38th Summer Institute on Aging has also been approved for up to 15.75 counseling hours. For a listing of approved West Virginia licensed professional counselor sessions, go to www.wvsioa.org.

This conference has been approved for a maximum of 23.7 continuing education contact hours for nurses through the�WVU�School of Nursing Charleston Division.

Conference participants will be provided lunch each day and free parking will be made available for commuters.
