West Virginia University dance students have been building their Spring Dance Showcase from the ground up.

The concerts will be held at 7 and 9 p.m. Thursday, April 28, and 7 and 9 p.m. Friday, April 29, in the Edna Falbo Theatre in WVU’s Creative Arts Center.

“The Spring Dance Showcase gives our students an opportunity to create new and original work,” said Yoav Kaddar, professor and associate director of WVU’s dance program.

The production also serves as a capstone experience for dance majors.

“It gives our graduating seniors the experience of producing a dance concert, learning to do everything from publicity, fundraising, program design, scheduling rehearsals, holding audition, to house management, and so on,” Kaddar added.

Dance faculty serve as advisors and guide the students through the production process. Dance majors and minors serve as choreographers and choose WVU student performers through the audition process.

“The rehearsal process is generally six to seven weeks long, with the choreographer presenting their work at three different showings along the way,” Kaddar said. “The final showing is in front of a panel of adjudicators including faculty and students from the program.”

A total of thirteen dances were under consideration for this year’s Spring Dance Showcase, and, after very competitive adjudication process, 12 will be featured in the concerts.
