West Virginia University musicians will bring sounds and traditions from around the globe to the Creative Arts Center in the World Music Showcase Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9, in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre.

The concert will feature the WVU African Music and Dance Ensemble, WVU Steel Bands, and the WVU Gamelan.

“This semester’s concert focuses on contemporary arrangements for traditional ensembles including music from Trinidad, Ghana, Indonesia, and Guinea,” said Michael Vercelli, director of WVU’s World Music Center.

A highlight of the concert will be the world premier of “Gamelan Melanin” by WVU alumni Rafael Langoni Smith.

“Mr. Smith’s work combines traditional Balinese gamelan compositional form with contemporary western musical ideas,” said Vercelli.

The WVU African Music and Dance Ensemble will also feature an arrangement by Mitch Greco, who is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Percussion at WVU.

For concert tickets and information, call the WVU Box Office at (304) 293-SHOW. Admission is free to WVU students presenting a valid ID to any usher.
