Monday, Feb. 22
LECTURE: Musicology
Dr. Michael Scott Cuthbert (MIT), will discuss “How Do Computers ‘Hear’ Music? An Introduction to Digital Musicology” at 6 p.m. in 232A Creative Arts Center. Cuthbert’s talk will present some of the most surprising findings uncovered by “listening faster” using computers on music from the Middle Ages to the present. Cuthbert, Associate Professor of Music at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (AB ‘98, AM ‘01, Ph. D. ‘06, Harvard University), is a musicologist who has worked extensively on music of the fourteenth-century, computational musicology, and minimalism and other music of the past forty years.

PLAY: “The Colored Museum”
George C. Wolfe’s satirical commentary on the African-American experience, “The Colored Museum,” directed by Visiting Instructor of Acting Mya Brown, will be presented Feb. 23 and 24 at 7 p.m., in the Ballroom of the West Virginia University Mountainlair. The performance, which is free and open to the public, is part of WVU’s Center for Black Culture and Research Black History Month events and has been directed by Brown of the School of Theatre & Dance. Wednesday, Feb. 24
ART MUSEUM: Lunchtime Look
WVU Professor of Art History Bernie Schultz, former dean of the College of Creative Arts, will discuss a painting by French artist Jean Metzinger during the Art Museum of WVU’s next “Lunchtime Looks” program on Wednesday, Feb. 24. WVU students, faculty and staff, and the general public are invited to bring a brown bag lunch to the Museum Education Center Grand Hall at noon and meet with other art enthusiasts to enjoy their midday meal. At 12:30 p.m., the group will move to one of the museum’s galleries for the 20-minute, in-depth look at Metzinger’s painting, “Maison dans la Foret” (House in the Forest), 1921, which is currently on view in the museum’s upper gallery. The painting was a gift to the WVU Art Collection from Drs. Paul and Laura Mesaros.
Thursday, Feb. 25
CONCERT: WVU Symphony Orchestra
The West Virginia University Symphony Orchestra continues its 2015-2016 season with a concert on Thursday, Feb. 25, that features WVU faculty member Mikylah McTeer as violin soloist. As with the other concerts presented by WVU’s premiere ensembles, the concert will be free for WVU students. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre under the baton of Maestro Arnold. It will be webcast on YouTube here thanks to the efforts of students in WVU’s music industry program. PLAY: “Waving Goodbye.”
The WVU LAB Theatre program will present Jamie Pacino’s “Waving Goodbye” at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26 and 27, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, in the Vivian Davis Michael Theatre at the Creative Arts Center. “Waving Goodbye” is a touching and provocative story of 17-year old Lily Blue, who is still struggling with the loss of her father and is forced to face her absent mother. The performances are free and open to the public, but seating is limited.

MESAROS GALLERIES: “Conjunction” Faculty Show
Fourteen WVU School of Art and Design faculty members spent the past two years working with printmakers at Artists Image Resource (AIR) in Pittsburgh to produce original art projects. Now they will display their interdisciplinary works at the Creative Arts Center’s Mesaros Galleries. Titled “Conjunction: Projects by WVU School of Art and Design Faculty,” the show opens Jan. 25 and continues through Feb. 26. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, from noon to 9:30 p.m. The galleries are closed Sundays and University holidays. Special individual or group viewing times may be arranged upon request.
Saturday, Feb. 27
CONCERT: High School Honor Orchestra
Outstanding string musicians from high schools in West Virginia and surrounding states will take part in WVU’s annual High School Honor Orchestra Event, Feb. 25-27. The students will present a concert at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 27, in the Creative Arts Center’s Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre. Directed by WVU Symphony Orchestra Conductor Mitchell Arnold, the concert is free and open to the public.
GUEST ARTIST RECITAL: Lisa Pegher
Guest artist and percussionist Lisa Pegher will present a recital at 6 p.m. Feb. 27 in Bloch Learning and Performance Hall, 200A Creative Arts Center. Pegher is a multiple percussion solo artist, drummer and composer who is known for pioneering percussion as a solo instrument within the orchestral realm and beyond. She has made it her life’s work to present percussion to larger audiences by commissioning, collaborating, and creating new works and performances that bring percussion to the front of the stage. The recital is free and open to the public.
