A graphic artist and educator with an interest in social change will deliver the next visiting artist lecture for West Virginia University’s School of Art & Design.

Ryan Clifford will speak at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in Bloch Learning and Performance Hall, 200A Creative Arts Center.

“Ryan believes the next generation of design leaders can make a positive impact on society,” said Joe Galbreath, assistant professor of graphic design in WVU’s College of Creative Arts.

Clifford teaches graphic design at Iowa State University in the College of Design. He’s an advisor to Project M, an international social design initiative committed to helping young designers use their skills to create positive change in the world.

Clifford’s recent work with Project M included work in Greensboro, Ala., and Belfast, Maine, where he led design intensive, community based social design blitzes.

He taught at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where he was the Associate Director of the Center for Design Practice, a multi-disciplinary project-based studio which engaged students and outside partners in socially conscious projects with the goal of making a positive impact on society. He also taught at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York.

He has worked in corporate design and advertising and was creative designer at General Motors in Detroit, where he was responsible for branding implementation, identity design, and environmental graphics.

His work has been recognized by the National Paperbox Association and the Rochester Advertising Foundation. He’s been featured in How International Design Annual and Print Regional Design Annual, and he’s included in the book, “Indie Publishing” from Princeton Architectural Press.
