As the fraternities at West Virginia University gear up for spring recruitment, Dr. Roy W. Baker, associate dean of students and director of Greek Life, continues to work with the Interfraternity Council (IFC) to reinforce a culture shift within the fraternity community that promotes a safe and positive environment.

“As WVU Greek Life prepares for spring recruitment, the Interfraternity Council (IFC) is busy enforcing new policies and procedures recently implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of our members and an environment that supports academic and social success,” said Baker.

“We are working collectively to improve the overall quality of the new member recruitment process so that our students have a more meaningful experience,” he said. “The elimination of alcohol during recruitment and the development of a level playing field for all fraternities to recruit members for the right reason should serve us well in the future.”

Formal recruitment for Interfraternity Council fraternities begins Monday (Feb. 8) and ends on Thursday (Feb. 11).

A transformative change to help fraternity members better align their behavior with stated values of scholarship, leadership, philanthropy, service learning and high standards of behavior, has been one of Dr. Bill Schafer’s top priorities since day one as Vice President of WVU Student Life.

The WVU Interfraternity Council has increased the GPA requirement to 2.50 and, they are also hosting mandatory educational programs for potential new members to learn more about what the fraternity community has to offer.

“We are clearly articulating expectations and guidelines to both current and potential members and providing them with the tools and information needed for a more positive experience in Greek Life—empowering them to make good, sound decisions,” said Baker.

He added, “The changes taking place in Greek Life at WVU are unprecedented and challenging – a process that will take time. As a result, I do not expect recruitment to be faultless this year.”

WVU’s fraternity and sorority community is home to 16 Interfraternity Council (IFC) fraternities and 9 Panhellenic sororities, and five National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC) fraternities and sororities. The National Pan-Hellenic Council is made up solely of historically African-American sororities and fraternities.
