A West Virginia University graduate with broad experience in integrated marketing communications, event management and social media strategy is returning to her alma mater to serve as director of marketing and communications for the WVU Alumni Association.

Allyson Cannon, who formerly served in key communications roles in Washington, D.C. – including as the recruitment and social media manager for The National Press Club – assumes her new position today (Jan. 11).

Cannon will be responsible for leading an integrated communications plan for the WVU Alumni Association that encompasses member outreach, managing communications tools including social media, electronic news and marketing pieces and other communications initiatives. She will also coordinate major alumni events and serve as the primary spokesperson for the Alumni Association.

“We are excited to welcome Allyson Cannon back to WVU to lead our communications efforts,” said Sean Frisbee, executive director of the WVU Alumni Association and vice president of alumni relations at WVU. “She brings an extensive background in developing marketing campaigns and building relationships for a national media organization that will help the Alumni Center reach greater heights and expand its global reach through a cutting-edge marketing and communications strategy.”

Cannon looks forward to working to help the Alumni Center foster important existing member relationships – and form new ones.

“Coming back to WVU with the charge of taking the Alumni Association’s marketing and communications strategy to the next level is a dream position for me,” said Cannon. “I am excited and honored to bring my background of connecting people to help the Alumni Association continue to grow and build connections with our loyal Mountaineer alumni.”

Cannon is a native of Frederick, Md. and is a 2009 graduate of the WVU Reed College of Media with a concentration in broadcast news.

The WVU Alumni Association has more than 190,000 graduates worldwide and boasts 100 chapters and constituent groups across the county, in addition to six international chapters.
