Area veterans and representatives from West Virginia University will mark the 74th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor with a ceremony to remember and honor the more than 2,400 victims killed.

The ceremony, sponsored by WVU Veterans Affairs, will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday (Dec.7) in front of Oglebay Plaza on the WVU Downtown Campus, followed by food and beverages served in the Rhododendron Room of the Mountainlair.

Speakers at the event will include West Virginia University Army and Air Force Cadets.

“There are more than a thousand reasons to remember what happened on the morning of December 7, 1941 that will forever be a touchstone for our nation and the role America would play as a world leader in the next several decades,” said Jerry McCarthy, director of WVU Veteran Affairs. “The Day of Infamy” led to a conflict that lasted more than four years and altered every aspect of American life, including politics, business, media, and entertainment.”

Ceremonies marking the anniversary of Pearl Harbor have taken place at the Oglebay Plaza since the early 1970’s.
