Members of the West Virginia University Figure Skating Club will assist the Mason-Dixon Figure Skating Club’s learn-to-skate program, which begins in January. The program is designed to teach young people and adults fundamental ice-skating techniques in accord with the United States Figure Skating Association’s Basic Skills Program.

The Mason-Dixon Figure Skating Club, a Morgantown-based organization, is dedicated to offering young people the chance to perform in shows and exhibitions as well as to test at various skill levels through the U.S. Figure Skating Association.

“This is a fabulous, and relatively inexpensive, way for people young and less young to learn how to skate,” said Mark Brazaitis, a professor in WVU’s Department of English who also serves as the club’s faculty advisor. “Our instructors are great skaters and enthusiastic, friendly teachers.”

Angela Barclay, a WVU graduate with a masters degree in nursing from Somerset, Pennsylvania, a past president of the WVU Figure Skating Club, is the director of the program. Several current club members will participate as instructors.

No experience is required to participate in the six-week program. In addition to novice skaters, the program is designed to accommodate skaters with some experience.

Classes will be held on Sundays from 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Morgantown Ice Arena beginning on January 17. The cost is $115, which includes a Basic Skills membership, on-ice insurance with the U.S. Figure Skating Association, free rental skates, and free access to the rink’s public skating sessions over the duration of the six-week course.

The Morgantown Ice Arena is located near White Park at 1001 Mississippi Street.
