Club Sports at West Virginia University came together last week to collect more than 4,000 canned food items for students and community members facing food insecurity and hunger.

Items were donated to Scott’s Run Settlement House and WVU’s campus food bank, “The Rack.” Scott’s Run Settlement House, located in Osage, West Virginia, offers a variety of services and programs to members of the Morgantown community who are in need. The WVU men’s ultimate Frisbee team brought in the most donations with more than 400 cans collected.

“I am proud of the hard work and dedication our students put into this community service project,” said Bruce Brubaker, program coordinator for WVU Club Sports. “As a result of their time and commitment, WVU is able to help out the community by stocking two food pantries.”

The donated food items were delivered to the Scott’s Run Settlement House in vans and trailers supplied by Adventure WV. Staff and students from WELLWVU served hot apple cider and provided information on local service projects to student volunteers, as they worked to load the vans and trailers.

“The spirit in which these groups came together to support others in need is remarkable,” said Brubaker. “The most rewarding part is knowing their efforts will feed dozens of people in the community.”

WVU Club Sports has sponsored a food drive each November for nearly two decades.
