West Virginia University is creating a student services hub to centrally locate student accounts, registration and financial aid on the Evansdale Campus.

The Office of the University Registrar, Office of Student Accounts and Office of Financial Aid are moving to the new Evansdale Crossing facility starting Nov. 16. They are combining to form Mountaineer Hub on the second and third floors, with the student customer service desk on the second floor. The Hub will also include Student Employment, Scholarships and Revenue Services.

The Office of Student Accounts will move on Nov. 16, the Office of the University Registrar will move Nov. 17-18 and the Office of Financial Aid will move Nov. 19-20. They will start serving students in the Mountaineer Hub beginning November 16.

Once the move is complete, the downtown offices will be closed and students will need to seek those services at the Evansdale facility. Starting in the new year, staff in the Mountaineer Hub will be cross-trained so that most student questions can be handled with one interaction.

Brenda Thompson, senior adviser for strategic initiatives, said that student surveys have shown some dissatisfaction with what is often referred to as the “campus run-around.” This is a frequently heard concern at college campuses across the country and many have moved to a similar model of locating student service offices in one facility to ease access to those services. Currently, these offices are located in different buildings on the downtown campus.

“We see it as a real opportunity to provide full service to the students that are contacting the areas because we will cross-train staff so that they have a good understanding of all three areas and how they are interrelated,” Thompson said.

She said the new location is ideal since it is large enough to accommodate all of these offices and is convenient for students. It is along the PRT and bus lines and in close proximity to the Student Recreation Center, Student Health, the College of Creative Arts and Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources. Mountaineer Hub is also more accessible to the Health Sciences campus.

“We saw this as a great place to be able to take on this initiative and deliver the full student services element,” Thompson said.
