Stacy Vander Velde, associate director of the Office of Student Conflict Resolution at the University of Michigan, has been named director of Student Conduct at West Virginia University, effective Nov. 13.

The new leadership position was created by Vice President of Student Life Dr. Bill Schafer as part of a strategic initiative to strengthen standards of student conduct on campus and promote a culture of respect and social responsibility.

In this new role, Vander Velde will manage the student conduct system for individual and student organization accountability, to deter behavior that negatively affects student success initiatives and detracts from the academic mission of the University.

Schafer believes Vander Velde’s work in student conduct resolution will provide a fresh approach to how WVU educates students on the importance of respect and responsibility in a university community.

“Stacy Vander Velde is just the right person to fill this new position and move our efforts forward to change the culture at WVU,” Schafer said. “She is a very experienced student life professional from one of the top public universities in the nation. I believe she will be student-centered and fair in her approach to students who have violated the student conduct code.”

Vander Velde will report to the Dean of Students Corey Farris, and will oversee the University’s adjudication process and efforts to educate students on community standards, behavioral expectations and accountability.

“I am pleased that Stacy will be joining the WVU family,” Farris said. “She has a wealth of experience in educating students on being better citizens and holding students accountable when they violate community standards. She will bring a fresh look as the culture change at WVU continues to take hold.”

She will also work collaboratively with Housing and Residence Life, Greek Life and the University’s Title IX Coordinator.

Vander Velde said she looks forward to building strong relationships across the campus community with faculty, staff, and students as well as within the Morgantown community.

“I am excited to join this fantastic institution,” she said. “Through collaboration, I am optimistic that the Office of Student Conduct can provide a wealth of services to support students in better decision making and helping them to understand the resulting impact of their choices.”
