West Virginia University musicians will bring sounds and traditions from around the globe to the Creative Arts Center in the World Music Showcase at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre.

The concert will feature the WVU African Music and Dance Ensemble, WVU Steel Bands, WVU Gamelan and the WVU Bluegrass Band.

“This semester’s concert focuses on contemporary arrangements for traditional ensembles including music from Trinidad, Ghana, Indonesia, and Appalachia,” said Michael Vercelli, director of WVU’s World Music Center.

Joining the WVU Steel Bands will be guest artist Josh Armstrong from Delta State University in West Cleveland, Miss. Armstrong will be a featured soloist along with students from the WVU School of Music’s jazz studies program on two collaborative works.

The WVU Bluegrass and Old-Time Bands will perform works celebrating the contributions of Appalachian women wongwriters, while the WVU Gamelan explores traditional works from the island of Bali. Closing the concert will be selections from Ghana by the WVU African Music and Dance Ensemble.
