Pittsburgh-based printmaker and multidisciplinary artist John Pea makes art as a way to explore the natural world through his daily interactions. His most recent work, titled “Daily Geology: 2015,” is a collection of drawings he made over the last five years, in which he recorded a memorable moment from each day. The exhibition will open in the Laura Mesaros Gallery of the West Virginia University Creative Arts Center on Oct. 15.

Pea will also speak about his work as part of the School of Art and Design’s 2015-2016 Visiting Artist Lecture Series at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall (Room 200A) of the CAC. A reception will follow at 6 p.m. that will open the exhibition of his works. All events are free and open to the public.

By making drawings of his daily routine, Pea mimics the way geological processes slowly carve out and shape forms that are both monumental and powerful. He records moments of his life as honestly and unapologetically as possible, writing about his interpersonal relationships and his struggles with anxiety and depression, as well as moments of elation, boredom, confusion and banality. He tells a story, while at the same time resisting the need to create resolution, with the hope that his audience can relate to his experiences.
