Dr. Roy W. Baker, director of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and associate director of HUB-Robeson Student Union and Student Activities at The Pennsylvania State University, has been named associate dean of students and director of Greek Life at West Virginia University, effective Oct. 30.

The new leadership position was created by Vice President of Student Life Dr. Bill Schafer as part of a strategic initiative to strengthen and revitalize Greek Life, with special emphasis on scholarship, service, leadership, friendship and safety.

In this new role, Baker will serve as a mentor to and advocate for the Greek community to bring about “transformative change” in the way Greek life is viewed and functions.

“After a national search we have identified an individual who has enormous Greek Life experience at great universities and colleges,” Schafer said. “I look forward to working with Dr. Baker and our students to develop a Greek community at WVU that will serve as a national model that others look to for inspiration and guidance.”

Baker will report to Associate Vice President and Dean of Students Corey Farris, and will oversee the new Greek Life office and initiatives that promote the ideals and high standards fraternities and sororities should follow.

“Dr. Baker has a track record of success that he will be bringing to WVU,” Farris said, “including setting high standards and holding organizations accountable. And his ability to build relationships with students and alumni is truly outstanding.”

Dr. Baker will also work with the three Greek councils on campus — Interfraternity (IFC), Panhellenic and National Pan-Hellenic (NPHC).

“I am excited and honored to have this opportunity to work with students, alumni and staff at West Virginia University to create a fraternity and sorority program that emulates the institution’s mission,” Baker said. “I want to thank the search committee and staff at WVU who have demonstrated their confidence in my work, and their commitment to the future and support of Greek Life at West Virginia University.”

WVU’s Greek community is home to 16 IFC fraternities, nine Panhellenic sororities and three NPHC fraternities and sororities. The National Pan-Hellenic Council is comprised solely of historically African-American sororities and fraternities.
