Edward Glaeser, Fred and Eleanor Glimp Professor of Economics at Harvard University, will be the featured speaker at the second West Virginia University College of Business and Economics Distinguished Speaker Series event this fall. The event will be held Oct. 7 at 1:30 p.m. at the Erickson Alumni Center.

Glaeser, who also serves as director of the Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston, teaches microeconomic theory, urban economics and public economics. Glaeser studies the economics of cities and has written scores of articles on urban issues, including the growth of cities, segregation, crime and housing markets.

He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1992, and has been at Harvard ever since.

Glaeser’s book entitled Triumph of the City: How Our Greatest Invention Makes Us Richer, Smarter, Greener, Healthier, and Happier (2011) summarizes Glaeser’s years of research into the role that cities play in fostering human achievement and “is at once polymathic and vibrant.”

The B&E Distinguished Speaker Series events are presented in part by Wells Fargo. Sponsorship for this event is also provided by the WVU College of Business and Economics Center for Free Enterprise, the B&E Department of Economics and the WVU Regional Research Institute.

The event is free and open to the public. A shuttle will be provided to pick up students in front of B&E at 12:30 p.m. and return for one more loop.
