As the leaves begin to turn shades of red, orange and gold, the West Virginia University Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design and WVU Extension Service invite prospective and current students, their families and the general public to learn more about what the college has to offer at its inaugural Fall Festival.
The event will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Animal Sciences Farm on Stewartstown Road.
It will feature a number of interactive displays and demonstrations that promote the diverse academic programs available throughout the college.
Guests will be able to examine a drone and learn how the WVU Natural Resource Analysis Center uses the technology in stream restoration efforts; canine members of the Davis College will show off the skills they’ve learned as part of the service dog training program, and horticulture students will teach participants how to make mini greenhouses.
Representatives from WVU Extension Service 4-H Youth Development and Families in Health programs will be on-hand to engage participants in the areas of food safety and healthy food choices.
According to Amber Hines, senior director of academic administration, this is the perfect opportunity for prospective students to get to know the college, its faculty and staff in a fun and relaxed environment.
“In the WVU Davis College we take pride in our hands-on learning opportunities,” she said. “What better way to showcase this to prospective students than an event that extends our academic programs beyond the four walls of a classroom.”
But the event isn’t just for prospective students.
“We provide programs that educate our students and the local community on caring for the things that impact people’s lives on a daily basis – our food, clothing and homes are prime examples,” Hines explained. “The hope is that they take this knowledge and share it to make a positive difference.”
For those who would like to know more about the university as a whole, WVU admissions counselors will give scheduled presentations and answer general questions. Additionally, Davis College representatives will be on-hand to answer college specific questions.
While limited parking is available at the Animal Sciences Farm, attendees are encouraged to take advantage of free, regular shuttle service from Mountaineer Station across the street from Applebee’s on Van Voorhis Road.
Guests are asked to pre-register by noon on Sept. 30.
