What are a Brazilian comedian-turned-maid, a doctor and her surgeon husband, a sister who loves to clean, and an unexpected lover all doing in the same house? They’re having a slightly surreal experience of community, comedy, and love.

The West Virginia University School of Theatre and Dance will present the engaging modern play, “The Clean House,” by Sarah Ruhl, directed by Jim Knipple, in the Gladys G. Davis Theatre September 25 – 26, 28 – 29, October 1 – 3 at 7:30 p.m. and September 27, October 4 at 2 p.m.

Ruhl’s writing reflects the complexities of modern society by breaking free from the “well-made” play, leaving behind the conventions of a story-line, climax, and objective in order to focus in on human relationship and emotion. Her mentor, renowned playwright, Paula Vogel explains, “There’s not anyone else like her. There are no models to refer to. Ten years from now, we’ll say, ‘It’s rather Sarah Ruhl.’”

“The Clean House,” at first glance, reflects its title: a pristine house occupied by a busy, professional couple. What was once realistic, however, quickly stretches into a realm of memory and surrealism, while maintaining its essential truth and plausibility, giving a glimpse of each character’s emotional life.

Director Jim Knipple is passionate about his work on “The Clean House.” “Sarah Ruhl is one of my absolute favorite playwrights,” said Knipple, a resident artist and visiting assistant professor of acting and directing at WVU. “What I love is, she writes differently – you know it’s funny – she has a way of writing that comes at you from the inside out, and it’s so simple and poignant. She can distill things down into their essences.”

Scenic design is by Robert Klingelhoefer, costume design by MFA student Cody Lorich, and lighting and sound design by Alan McEwen.

The cast features Kristen Aviles, Amber Gonzalez, Monica Hanigan, Willa McWhoter, and Glenn Muir.

Tickets are $20 dollars to the general public, $15 for student and senior citizens, and $10 dollars for children under 14.
