Donna Legault, a Canadian artist who engages audiences with sound in public spaces, will open the WVU School of Art and Design 2015-2016 Visiting Artist Lecture Series with a public lecture and exhibition, Tuesday, Sept. 1.

The lecture will take place at 5 p.m. in the Creative Arts Center’s Bloch Learning and Performance Hall (Room 200A).

A reception will follow the lecture at 6 p.m., opening an exhibition of her works at the CAC’s Paul Mesaros Gallery. All events are free and open to the public.

Legault, who is currently an electronic arts faculty member at the University of Ottawa, is interested in offering opportunities to listen and acknowledge sonic territories defined through the transformation of sound. Her installations activate the spectator and challenge their relation to sound by drawing attention towards the qualities of “noise” as a physical and temporal presence.

Also exhibiting artwork in the adjacent Laura Mesaros Gallery is WVU sculpture program coordinator Dylan Collins, who uses fabrication techniques to explore our collective desire for classification and organization.

Collins will present a lecture on September 24 at 5 p.m.in The Bloch Learning and Performance Hall, followed by a reception for his exhibition at 6 p.m. at the Gallery. Both exhibitions will be on display through October 2.

Managed and programmed by Curator Robert Bridges and the WVU School of Art and Design, the Mesaros Galleries organize a diverse and exciting schedule of exhibitions throughout the year. The galleries are committed to showing experimental work that is innovative both in terms of media and content.

The Mesaros Galleries and the WVU School of Art and Design also host contemporary artists of important or growing reputation who work in all media in the Lecture Series. Legault’s lecture is part of The School of Art & Design’s Global Positioning Studies (GPS) initiative, which positions students at the crossroads between a local sense of place and a global understanding of that place in the world. Through direct experience, Global Positioning Studies courses encourage students to engage the world as a fertile ground for art making and critical research.

All Mesaros Galleries events, including art lectures, exhibitions and receptions are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, from noon to 9:30 p.m.
