The 2015 Jackson’s Mill Disc Golf Tournament begins at 8 a.m. with the first round tee-off slated for 9:30 a.m. The day will conclude with an awards ceremony at 5 p.m.

The Jackson’s Mill Disc Golf Classic is a partnership between the WVPDGA and the WVU Extension Service.

The disc golf course debuted at ALPHA II State 4-H Camp in June, and it provides 4-H’ers the opportunity to experience a new sport while teaching the public about diabetes and related health education. Each tee is accompanied by a kiosk containing educational information approved by the FDA.

The event builds on the 4-H program’s long-standing commitment to healthy and active lifestyles.

“The University has a responsibility to continue to adapt to the needs and opportunities of the state,” said Steve Bonanno, dean and director of the WVU Extension Service. “The disc golf course provides a new recreation opportunity for the state while providing a new educational opportunity for 4-H’ers.”

The course was made possible with assistance from global healthcare company NovoNordisk.

The West Virginia Disc Golf Association is a membership-based organization aimed at promoting and advancing disc golf throughout the state by having a presence at tournaments, charity events and community service projects.

For more than a century, 4-H has focused on agricultural science, electricity, mechanics, entrepreneurship and natural sciences. Today, 4-H out-of-school opportunities also exist in subjects like rocketry, robotics, biofuels, renewable energy and computer science.
