The West Virginia University Student Life Office of Student Success will re-open the Academic Resource Centers (ARCs) tonight (Aug. 24) from 6-9:30 p.m.

The Academic Resource Centers offer free peer-led, drop-in tutoring and other academic support. Students can receive tutoring in several subjects including math, biology, chemistry, geology, physics, statistics, general engineering, and Chinese. Tutoring on other subjects is available upon request.

“We are very excited to open the Academic Resource Centers tonight,” said Regan Bruni, director of the Office of Student Success. “This will be a great opportunity for WVU students to learn more about the Academic Resource Centers as well as meet our tutors.”

The Centers currently have 28 tutors working across campus who Bruni says come highly recommended by faculty and can tutor in multiple subjects. Tutors are certified through the College Reading and Learning Association, and they must have earned a grade of B or better in the course that they tutor. In addition, they must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0.

“Helping students develop competence in their academic subjects is the primary focus of our tutoring services,” said Morgan Sharpless, program coordinator with Office of Student Success. “Students benefit most from seeking tutoring early in the semester and continuing to meet regularly throughout the semester.”

The Academic Resource Centers are open every night of the week from 6-9:30 p.m. in the Downtown Campus Library and Brooke Tower (Sunday–Thursday), and at WVUp All Night (Friday–Sunday) in the Mountainlair.

Last semester tutors worked with more than 2,200 students and 66 percent of the students, visiting the Academic Resource Centers, received a grade of C or better in the courses for which they received tutoring assistance.
