The West Virginia University Center for Democracy and Citizenship Education and the College of Education and Human Services will be holding a conference for social studies educators from many parts of West Virginia on Monday, June 22. It will take place in the WVU Erickson Alumni Center (Ballrooms 110/111) from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Dr. Robert Waterson, director of the CDCE and conference organizer, hopes the conference will provide a great opportunity for West Virginia’s social studies educators in grades 5-12 to gather and exchange their knowledge and skills.
“A state discourse focused solely on social studies education is long overdue,” said Waterson. “I look forward to seeing the state’s educators collaborate and share their plans for the future. I have nothing but the upmost optimism about where we’re going in social studies education in West Virginia.”
Many presenters at the conference are Dr. Waterson’s former students—now teachers in West Virginia’s public schools—who plan to demonstrate how to take social studies beyond the textbooks and engage their students with the help of modern technology and innovative teaching strategies.
Dr. Waterson hopes the conference will assist West Virginia’s social studies educators in developing their own voices and maintaining their creativity and imagination for creating challenging and enjoyable learning experiences for their students.
A number of noteworthy speakers will present at the conference, including West Virginia House of Delegates representatives Barbara Evans Fleischauer and Amy Summers. Dr. Gypsy Denzine, Dean of the College of Education and Human Services will also offer remarks.
