The Appalachian Oil and Natural Gas Research Consortium at West Virginia University will present a workshop on the first public release of a two-year geological study of the Utica play in the Appalachian Basin.

The day-long workshop takes place on July 14, 2015, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Canonsburg, Pa. and is sponsored by the WVU Petroleum Technology Transfer Council and Environmentally Friendly Drilling Systems.

The Utica Shale Play Book Study Workshop will highlight research results that give comprehensive data on the oil and gas resource potential of the Utica play. The data provide geological evidence that the Utica may indeed be the next big Appalachian shale gas producer.

The Utica Play Book was produced by the Utica Shale Appalachian Basin Exploration Consortium, a partnership of 15 industry members, four state geological surveys, two universities, one consulting company, and one national lab, spearheaded by consortium director Dr. Doug Patchen. Patchen is renowned for his knowledge of the Appalachian Basin.

The research team members assembled by Patchen for the study will present, chapter by chapter, the contents of the Utica Play Book. Geologists, engineers, regulatory agency personnel and other stakeholders will learn about the stratigraphy, petrology, reservoirs, areal distribution, and estimates of oil and gas resources of this important play spanning West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, and New York.

The AONGRC’s Utica Shale Appalachian Basin Exploration Consortium includes the following members:

Research Team: WVU National Research Center for Coal and Energy, Washington University, Kentucky Geological Survey, Ohio Geological Survey, Pennsylvania Geological Survey, West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey, U.S. Geological Survey, Smith Stratigraphic, and U.S. DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory.

Sponsorship: Anadarko, Chevron, CNX, ConocoPhillips, Devon, EnerVest, EOG Resources, EQT, Hess, NETL Strategic Center for Natural Gas and Oil, Range Resources, Seneca Resources, Shell, Southwestern Energy, and Tracker Resources.
The AONGRC and PTTC are programs of the WVU National Research Center for Coal and Energy.
