The Department of Mathematics at West Virginia University will host well-known “Mathemagician” Arthur Benjamin on Thursday, April 9 for a special evening of amazing feats based on mathematics.

Benjamin, a mathematics professor at Harvey Mudd College and popular TED talk presenter, combines his longtime interest in magic with mathematics to create a unique experience called “Mathemagics.”

One of the most remarkable aspects of Benjamin’s show is a lively performance of large computations without the aid of a calculator.

“His mental computation abilities are some of the fastest and best in the world,” said Kevin Milans, math professor and the organizer of Benjamin’s visit.

The presentations are designed to give a sense of wonder at what can be accomplished with the power of math.
Benjamin is among the top five most-viewed TED talks and the Princeton Review rated him as one of the top 300 professors in the nation.

His presentation will be held at 7 p.m. April 9 in room G15 of the Life Sciences building on the WVU Downtown Campus. The presentation is free and open to the public.
