Two assistant professors from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at West Virginia University –Fei Dai and P.V. Vijay – have been selected as a 2015 ExCEEd Fellow by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The pair will attend the ExCEEd Teaching workshop, a six-day practicum that provides engineering educators with an opportunity to improve their teaching abilities.

The six day workshop focuses on effective teaching and learning, learning styles, communication skills, learning objectives, class organization, developing rapport with students and teaching with technology, among other topics.

Dai, who will attend the workshop scheduled for late June at Florida Gulf Coast University, joined the faculty at WVU in fall 2012. Working in the areas of construction engineering and management, he teaches courses in computer aided design, construction operations simulation and visual sensing for civil infrastructure.

“Being named an ExCEED Fellow is not only an honor, but more importantly a commitment to achieve excellence in teaching so that I can better nurture the next generation of civil engineers,” said Dai. “I will bring back what I learned at the workshop and make the most of it in my daily work.”

A two-time graduate of WVU, Vijay joined the faculty at WVU in the fall of 2013 after serving as a research assistant professor in the Statler College’s Constructed Facilities Center. His research and teaching centers on the use of advanced fiber-reinforced plastic composites, structural rehabilitation, sustainable construction and green building design. Vijay will attend the workshop scheduled for July 19-24 at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

“Being selected as an ASCE ExCEED Fellow provides me with an opportunity to serve as an ambassador of effective teaching,” said Vijay. “I expect this opportunity to help enhance the learning experience of my talented students and contribute toward my continued long-term professional development.”

ASCE has presented this workshop each summer for the past 16 years. Only 48 people worldwide are selected to participate.
