Lingering winter weather has many dreaming of spring break and sun-filled destinations. But, before you go, learn spring break safety tips from the West Virginia University Extension Service during a live, online Q&A session of “Ask the WVU Extension Expert,” on Wednesday (March 11).

The Q&A takes place from 7-8 p.m. on the WVU Extension Service Facebook page. Those who are unable to participate in the live session can ask questions in advance on the page beginning March 9; look for the “Ask in Advance” post.

Participants can also tweet their questions to @WVUExtension using the hashtag #askWVUext.

Experts from the WVU Extension Service, the WVU Police Department and WVU’s Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center will be on hand to address a variety of spring break topics to prepare for WVU’s upcoming break (March 21 – March 29).

Panelists include WVU Extension Service Monongalia County Families and Health Agent Eric Murphy and Wood County 4-H and Youth Development Agent Jodi Smith. The pair will offer insight for parents who want to talk to their teens about not engaging in risky behaviors. Additionally, they’ll be able to offer advice for youths and young adults worried about dealing with pressures associated with spring break.

Sergeant Jeff Wright from the WVU Police Department’s Crime Prevention and Community Policing Unit will give advice on staying safe while traveling and precautions that people should take in situations they’re unfamiliar with. Sergeant Wright can also provide tips for keeping your home or dorm safe while you’re on vacation.

Jim Keresztury, representing the Cancer Prevention and Control Department of the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center and the Mountains of Hope Cancer Coalition, will make sure that beach-goers have all the information they need to safeguard themselves from increased skin cancer risk caused by the sun’s damaging rays.
