The Martin Luther King, Jr. State Holiday Commission recently recognized West Virginia University College of Law Atiba Ellis for his contributions to education.

The commission selected Ellis as the winner in the scholarship category of its 2015 Living the Dream awards. The award honors individuals who best exemplify, through action or personal traits, the principles and ideals characterizing King in his pursuit of social change.

Ellis, who joined the College of Law faculty in 2009, focuses his research on voting rights law with specific attention to how varying ideas of the right to vote can exclude some voters.
According to the commission, Ellis’s research demonstrates a commitment to promoting analysis and discussion on the problem of vote denial.

The West Virginia Martin Luther King, Jr. State Holiday Commission develops, promotes, coordinates, approves, reviews and recommends activities to commemorate the birthday and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr. It also encourages state, local and county governmental agencies, educational institutions, civic organizations and the general public to plan activities for observance of the holiday and to provide them with assistance and information.
