Three undergraduate students studying in the West Virginia University College of Creative Arts, Alex-Marie Meyerriecks, Tyler Hall, and Brandon Rehm, have been named Dean’s Honors Scholars for the 2014-2015 school year.
The students were selected to receive $1000 scholarships. All are CCA majors who are also enrolled in the WVU Honors College. The scholarships are renewable for all four years of undergraduate study.
“We are pleased to be able to offer scholarships to assist these high-achieving students,” College of Creative Arts Dean Paul Kreider said. “We hope these awards allow the students to remain focused on their education.”
The Dean’s Honors Scholarship scholarship winners include:
Tyler Hall, from Mannington, West Virginia, is an undergraduate student in the Graphic Design program in the School of Art and Design. Tyler attended North Marion High School, where during his junior year he took a Graphic Arts class to enhance the skills he had been learning on his own time in Photoshop. He is interested in graphic design for clients or businesses and in creating logos, merchandise, and websites.
Alex-Marie Meyerriecks, from Milford, Pennsylvania, is currently a freshman in the School of Theatre and Dance. She is studying for a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Design and Technology, with emphasis in stage management. Alex-Marie attended Delaware Valley High School where her interest in stagecraft and stage management began in Delaware Valley’s Drama Club. She also received the Delaware Valley Drama Scholarship as well as WVU’s Sam Boyd Jr. Scholarship and other grants for academic excellence.
Brandon Rehm, a native of Wheeling, West Virginia, is an undergraduate student in the School of Music. He is a 2014 graduate of Wheeling Park High School, where he was an active member of the band, orchestra, jazz band and steel band. He also had the honor of performing in the West Virginia All-State Band on clarinet and in a state-ranked saxophone quartet. He was awarded the Louis Armstrong band award during his senior year. He is studying for a degree in Music Education at WVU and plans to teach and inspire young adults as a band director.
The Dean’s Honors Scholarships in the College of Creative Arts are provided by Morgantown residents Carl and Victoria Cather and Jim and Judy Culberson. Both couples are well-known members of the Morgantown area community and have pledged $25,000 each to the WVU College of Creative Arts to endow the Dean’s Honors Scholarships in the arts. The scholarships assist in attracting high achieving students to WVU.
The Cather Dean’s Honors Scholarship gives first preference to West Virginia resident students in the School of Art and Design and the Culberson Dean’s Honors Scholarship benefits undergraduate students enrolled in the WVU School of Theatre and Dance.
The Dean’s Scholarship in Music is comprised of donations collected and pooled in the Dean’s Honors Scholarship account.
All Dean’s Honors Scholarship winners are also enrolled in the the WVU Honors College, established in 2006 as an outgrowth of the University Honors Program. The Honors College was created to help students who thirst for knowledge beyond their major fields of study. It offers special courses taught by some of the University’s top faculty from a variety of fields and strongly encourages students to seek out and participate in educational experiences such as undergraduate research, study abroad programs and internships.
The Dean’s Honors Scholarships in the WVU College of Creative Arts were made in conjunction with A State of Minds: The Campaign for West Virginia’s University. The $1 billion comprehensive campaign being conducted by the WVU Foundation on behalf of the University runs through December 2017.
