In 2013, West Virginia University alumni received a special greeting on their birthdays from their alma mater. The birthday greeting, created by the WVU Alumni Association, featured the popular Flying WV cookie, along with music and a birthday wish.

The innovative greeting received the “gold award” nod from MarCom in the Motion Graphic Video category.

The MarCom Awards recognize outstanding creative achievement by marketing and communications professionals. The gold award is presented to entries judged to exceed the high standards of the industry norm. Entries for the awards come from corporate marketing and communication departments, advertising agencies, public relations firms, design shops, production companies and freelancers. This year there were more than 6,000 entries submitted from all 50 states and 34 countries.

“It is wonderful to see the hard work of our communications team recognized at this level,” said Stephen Douglas, president and CEO, WVU Alumni Association. “Keeping our alumni engaged and enhancing affinity to WVU remains a vital part of our mission. The birthday greeting was so well received and reminds us that these simple touches mean so much to our Mountaineer family.”

Each year the WVU Alumni Association and WVU Foundation send a new electronic birthday greeting to all alumni and donors in honor of their special day. Alumni can also send e-cards to friends/family using mountaineerconnection.com.

The National Alternative Fuels and Training Consortium also was recognized with two MarCom awards, including a platinum award for its Clean Cities Learning Program entry and a gold award for the Alternative Energy Learning Center.
