The West Virginia University Department of English and the Department of World Languages, Literatures and Linguistics will host a workshop on “Linguistics, Careers and You,” a workshop on professional applications, with Anastasia Nylund, Ph.D., on Friday, Nov. 14 at 4 p.m. in room 106 of Oglebay Hall.

This workshop will apply a linguistic lens to career exploration. After sharing the stories of a few linguistics graduates and their careers, Nylund will help students identify the skills their linguistics training provides.

Nylund will also discuss specific ways in which linguistics students at any stage in their education can talk about linguistics as a key part of their professional paths.

Nylund is the interim director of the M.A. in Language and Communication at Georgetown University. Her research interests include language variation and identity, American dialects, linguistic style, and ideology.

Her work with the degree program includes teaching, mentoring, directing career education programming and helping students discover the links between their career goals and their linguistics training.

The workshop is free and open to the public.
