The West Virginia University College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences will induct four graduates into its 2014 Hall of Fame and name its 2014 Outstanding Alum at the Erickson Alumni Center on Friday (Nov. 7).

The College will also award the Dean’s Service Award, one of the highest honors it can bestow on a faculty or staff member. A reception will be held from 6-7 p.m. and the formal induction ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. The event is open to the public.

Patricia Anderson, Steven Cole, Jean Irion and Daniel Zottarelli will be inducted into the 2014 Hall of Fame are. The Hall of Fame ceremony will conclude with the 2014 Outstanding Alum Award presented to Judith Hayes. Andrew Ostrow will receive the Distinguished Service Award.

The CPASS is proud to add the names of this year’s class of inductees to its growing list of outstanding alumni. More than 125 alumni have previously been inducted into the College’s Hall of Fame.

To be eligible for nomination, an individual must hold a degree awarded by the WVU CPASS, or a certification in athletic training prior to 1997. The individual must have made significant contributions to the College, their profession and society. Those currently employed by the College are not eligible.

Patricia Anderson

Anderson earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from WVU and graduated with an M.A. from WVU in 1986. Anderson served as a physical education teacher and coach at German Senior High School in the Albert Gallatin Area School District. As a teacher, she focused on community service, while organizing and conducting fundraising events. She served as a pioneer in women’s sports for German Senior High and led the women’s basketball team to four section championships. She has served with local church groups, the American Red Cross, the WVU Alumni Association, National Council of Teachers of English and the Alumni Council for the WVU College of Education and Human Services.

Steven Cole

Cole graduated from WVU in 1976 with his bachelor’s in Physical Education/Athletic Training and earned his M.Ed.in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training from the University of Virginia in 1978. Now the Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations at the College of William & Mary, Cole oversees all aspects of the daily operations of the Athletic Department and 19 of 21 sports. He serves on college committees with a focus on the well being of student-athletes. He is the co-developer of the Sideline Management Assessment Response Techniques, a workshop for primary care physicians to enhance their sports medicine skills and increase their confidence and competency on the sidelines at sporting events. He is recognized nationally as an expert on the preparation of athletic training students for their national certification boards, the management of athletic injury insurance programs and teaching primary care physicians on-field injury management skills. Cole is a competitive age group triathlete and experienced personal fitness consultant.

Jean M. Irion

Irion earned her bachelor’s in General Science Education/ Physical Education/Athletic training in 1979 at WVU. She later earned her bachelor’s in physical therapy and her M.Ed. in Sports Medicine from Temple University. In 2000 she earned her Ed.D. in Education Leadership-Higher Education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Irion is currently an associate professor and academic coordinator of clinical education at the University of South Alabama. Irion is recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association and many colleagues around the world for her expertise in aquatic physical therapy and women’s health physical therapy. She was recently featured in a New York Times article, which highlighted the value of physical therapy intervention for pregnant women on bed rest.

Daniel Zottarelli

Zottarelli graduated from WVU in 1970 with a bachelor’s in Health and Physical Education. He earned a varsity letter wrestling for Hall of Fame Coach George Nedeff. Upon graduation he accepted a teaching and coaching position in Kent County, Maryland. He became the founder of a wrestling program at Kent County High School and the Kent County Junior Wrestling League. Over his 38 year career, his wrestling program became one of the top in the state. His coaching record upon retirement in 2002 was 309-88-4. In 2001, Zottarelli was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his lifetime service to wrestling. In 1996 he was inducted into the WVU Wrestling Hall of Fame and in 1990 the Maryland Public Schools Athletic Association inducted him into its Wrestling Hall of Fame. Zottarelli was also recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association as the National Scholastic Coach of the year in 2001.

Judith Hayes

Hayes earned her bachelor and master of science degrees in Exercise Physiology from WVU in 1982 and 1983, followed by a Master of Public Health degree in Occupational Health/Aerospace Medicine from the University of Texas. She completed a summer fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons in London, and is working on a dissertation for her doctoral degree at the University of Texas. Hayes is the director of the NASA Space Life Sciences Summer Institute, an educational series for summer interns, undergraduate and graduate students. She also leads the NASA/JSC postdoctoral fellowships for the Human Research Program. Currently, she is chief of the Biomedical Research and Environmental Sciences Division at the JSC. This department is responsible for the performance of biomedical research focused on understanding the normal human response to space flight and developing, testing, and delivering countermeasures to those responses that could affect crew health, safety, and/ performance during or after space flight missions. In 2007, she gave lectures on health care given to astronauts as well as the constraints astronaut physiology imposes on equipment design. She developed an integrated space life sciences training curriculum for the 2009 international class of astronauts. She is the recipient of several awards for management and research activities associated with NASA, including the prestigious Silver Snoopy Award presented by the Astronaut Office in recognition of her contributions to mission success.
