The West Virginia University Extension Service, in cooperation with Penn State, will offer a free, educational program, “Shale Mineral Management: Understanding Your Royalty Check” on Thursday (Nov. 6) at 6 p.m. at the Wheeling Island Casino in Wheeling.

The program will provide insight and understanding about how new trends in drilling production and utilization can affect royalties, for both landowners already leasing rights and those who may be considering leasing rights.

Karen Cox, WVU Extension Ohio County Agricultural and Natural Resources agent; Matt Henderson, shale gas assets manager for the Penn State Marcellus Center for Outreach and Research; and Steven Karabin, president of the Rhino Group, will provide comprehensive programming for royalty owners so they can understand exactly how their payments are calculated and how to decipher royalty pay stubs.

“There are complex issues and trends currently taking place in the oil and natural gas industry with fluctuating natural gas prices and companies subleasing certain parts of the rights to different entities,” said Cox. “Sometimes this leads to complex pay stubs or multiple checks from different sources, which can be incredibly hard to decipher. We simply want to make sure that residents of area are informed so that they can ensure they are getting their fair share in a timely manner.”

The program is sponsored by the law offices of Gold, Khourey and Turak; Guida Law Offices; Berry, Kessler, Crutchfield, Taylor and Gordon; and Rokisky and Associates. Representatives from these firms will be on hand to answer any royalty and legal questions.

At the end of the presentation, there will be a question and answer session.

Although attendance is free, seating is limited and pre-registration is required. Call 570-320-4429 or visit bit.ly/1rS3ekB to register. Requests for special accommodation needs can be directed to Carol Loveland at cal24@psu.edu or at the phone number above.

With gas leases on the mind of property owners across the state, WVU Extension Service’s Oil and Natural Gas Team aims to provide unbiased programming based on expertise and knowledge to help the citizens of West Virginia make informed decisions about the natural gas industry.
