Oboe students from the studio of Cynthia Anderson in the West Virginia University School of Music will perform a recital Friday, Oct. 17, at the Creative Arts Center, in honor of their upcoming trip to Vienna, Austria, during Thanksgiving recess.

The program begins at 6 p.m. in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall (Room 200A) and is free and open to the public.

Titled “A Night at the Vienna Opera,” the program will feature the oboe students in a program of arias and ensembles from operas by Viennese composers.

Music to be performed include arias from “The Magic Flute,” “Don Giovanni,” and “The Marriage of Figaro” by Mozart; “Fidelio” by Beethoven; “The Merry Widow” by Lehar; and “Die Fledermaus” by Strauss — all using the oboe as “the singer.”

The Double Reed Ensemble will perform the overture to “Die Fledermaus,” a waltz from “Der Rosenkavalier,” and the traditional ending of the Vienna New Year’s celebration, “Radetzky March” by Johann Strauss Sr.

Assisting artists include Yana Tyulkova on piano, Alex Heflin on mandolin and Chris Jones on cello. English translation for all arias will be projected above the performer, so the audience will always know what the oboe is “singing.”
