The United States is steeped in rich history. Members of the Morgantown community and other visitors will have a unique opportunity to be a part of that history through a rare checks exhibit at The Erickson Alumni Center at West Virginia University featuring checks signed by U.S. presidents, noted authors and other historical figures. The exhibit will be on display at the Center’s Barrett Hall of Honor Oct. 3-Oct. 31.

The display, on loan from Huntington National Bank, features 39 rare checks signed by 16 U.S Presidents, including George Washington, John Quincy Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Dwight D. Eisenhower; women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony; inventor Thomas Edison; and authors James Fenimore Cooper and Charles Dickens. One of the historical checks featured is signed by President Abraham Lincoln, the last document he signed before his assassination the very next evening.

Huntington Bank obtained the collection of these historical documents upon acquiring Union Commerce Bank in Cleveland in 1982. Huntington Bank Community President Chad Prather said the company is excited about the opportunity to share the exhibit with the greater Morgantown area community and regions beyond.

“A large part of the tradition of our company is serving the communities and regions where we live, work and do business,” Prather said. “One very meaningful way to serve our neighborhoods is to make available this historical treasure. We hope families, schools and civic organizations, and other community members will take advantage of this opportunity to visit this unique part of American history.”

Members of the community are welcome to view the exhibit – free of charge – Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at The Erickson Alumni Center (One Alumni Drive, Morgantown, West Virginia) until Oct. 31. The collection also will be on display during special events at the facility.
