West Virginia University’s student chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers received the Gold Award for its performance in the areas of planning and administration, programs, outreach and activities, member recruitment and regional participation.

“Winning the Gold Award shows how dedicated our students are to their profession,” said Wafik Iskander, who served as faculty adviser to the chapter during the 2013-14 school year.”They are very active and have worked very hard to earn this award.”

WVU’s IIE chapter gives members the opportunity to network with faculty and industry professionals, obtain training and certifications, serve the community and attend industry events, including the annual Mid-Atlantic Regional IIE Conference.

“Different schools host the conference each year. It’s a great opportunity to network with professionals and students in other chapters, and to learn about different career and research opportunities,” said Clayton Davis, the president of the WVU student chapter. “This year’s conference will be held at Clemson University, where we will look to defend our first-place title in the technical writing competition.”

The WVU chapter, which expects to have more than 60 members this year, is also involved in community events including high school visitation days, Girl Scout Day and a number of social and fundraising events. The chapter will also host WVU’s annual Trunk or Treat, an event that brings together students from various organizations across the University to hand out candy from the trunks of decorated cars to children. This year’s event will be held Oct. 31 at 5:30 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum.

“We plan, organize and participate in Trunk or Treat as a chapter and look forward to it every year,” Davis said. “It’s a community-wide event that gives children the opportunity to go trick-or-treating when they may not get a chance to otherwise.”

IIE is the largest professional society dedicated solely to the support of the industrial engineering profession. IIE, founded in 1948, has grown to include 15,000 members and 280 chapters worldwide.
