West Virginia University’s 27th annual Women of Color Luncheon will take place Oct. 1 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Mountainlair Ballrooms. The event, hosted by the WVU Council for Women’s Concerns, serves to celebrate, honor and empower all women. The luncheon is one of several events during WVU’s Diversity Week, held Sept. 29 – Oct. 3.

The keynote speaker will be Delegate Charlene Jennings Marshall. A lifelong resident of Monongalia County, Marshall has worked diligently to help pass legislation that benefits women and their families including paid childbirth leave for higher education personnel and adjusting penalties for failure to pay child support.

Delegate Marshall was elected mayor of Morgantown in 1991. She was the first African American female to become mayor in the state of West Virginia. She served as mayor until 1998 when she was first elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates.

“After attending the first Women of Color Luncheon 27 years ago, I have always been excited for each annual event,” Marshall said. “I am looking forward to addressing women of WVU and Monongalia County at this year’s luncheon to celebrate the diversity and strength in all of us.”

Tickets for the 27th annual Women of Color Luncheon are $17 per individual, and reservations can be made for tables of six or seven. Limited seating is available. To purchase tickets or learn more about the WVU Council for Women’s Concerns, visit http://cwc.wvu.edu.
