Many West Virginia University students are getting assistance in paying for college through the WVU Alumni Association’s Loyalty Permanent Endowment Fund, which this academic year is awarding more than $450,000 to approximately 400 West Virginia students, including valedictorians, student body presidents, and other scholars.

“West Virginia University provides amazing academic opportunities for students, as well as activities and events that help them strengthen their leadership and social skills,” said Steve Douglas, president and CEO, WVU Alumni Association. “It is important that we find ways to support our students to give them every opportunity to succeed here, and this scholarship program enables us to do that.”

The WVU Alumni Association will host its annual open house celebration for recipients and their families Sunday, Aug. 17, at The Erickson Alumni Center from 3-5 p.m. Students are invited to stop by the center to pick up their scholarship checks and enjoy light appetizers and refreshments. Students who cannot attend Sunday’s open house can pick up scholarship checks at the WVU Alumni Association (second floor of The Erickson Alumni Center) beginning Monday, Aug. 18, during regular business hours (M-F, 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

The Loyalty Permanent Endowment Fund scholarship was established by the Alumni Association in 1937 and has been awarded to nearly 5,000 students to assist with the cost of their college education. In order to qualify for the scholarship, students must be a West Virginia resident, have a minimum grade point average of 2.75, and show proven leadership and good citizenship through extracurricular activities, and have a need for financial assistance.

Through the generous support of alumni and donors, the fund has grown to nearly $14 million in assets.

Each scholarship recipient is chosen by the LPEF Trust Committee, including Gen. Earl M. Anderson, USMC, Ret., James Gardill and Vaughn Kiger. Douglas serves as the trust committee’s executive secretary.
