West Virginia University Press’s title Over the Alleghenies: Early Canals and Railroads of Pennsylvania by Robert J. Kapsch has been selected as a winner in the Scholarly Illustrated text category of the Association of American University Presses 2014 Book, Jacket, and Journal Show.

The association is an organization of nonprofit publishers whose members strive to advance scholarship through their offerings. The association’s mission is to assist its members through professional education, cooperative services, and public advocacy.

The annual Book, Jacket, and Journal show recognizes achievements in the design, production and manufacture of books, jacket, covers, and journals by members of the university press community. Approximately 263 books, 330 jacket and cover designs, and four journals were entered. Thirty-nine books, 22 jackets and covers, and one journal were chosen by the jurors as the very best examples from this pool of excellent design.

The 2014 show premiered at the association annual meeting in New Orleans, June 22-24. Afterward, the show will be exhibited at member presses around the country from September through May.

Over the Alleghenies: Early Canals and Railroads of Pennsylvania by Robert J. Kapsch is the definitive history of the state of Pennsylvania’s incredible canal and railroad system. Although often condemned as a colossal failure, this construction effort remains an innovative, magnificent feat that ushered in modern transportation to Pennsylvania and the entire country. With extensive primary research, over 100 illustrations, newspapers clippings, and charts and graphs, Over the Alleghenies examines and dissects the infrastructure project that bankrupted the wealthiest state in the Union.
