Earth Day cleanups are continuing in Morgantown Thursday (April 24) and over the weekend (April 26-27) through partnerships with West Virginia University, the communities of Morgantown and Star City and other environmental-conscious groups.

On Thursday, several hundred WVU students are gathering on the Mountainlair Green at approximately 4 p.m. to clean up litter throughout campus and in designated areas of the City, particularly along College Avenue and Willey Street. University and community members are encouraged to participate in the cleanup being sponsored by the Student Government Association, Panhellenic Council and the Interfraternity Council. (This event was rescheduled from April 22 due to rain).

The Solid Waste Management Board and Sunnyside Up donated trash bags for the event, the Board of Park and Recreation Commissioners donated work gloves, and a dumpster has been donated by Republic Services. In addition, the Morgantown Police Department will aid in roadside assistance.

On Saturday at Edith Barill Riverfront Park and Sunday at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park, there will also be an opportunity to clean up trash and plant spring flowers. Saturday’s activities are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Sunday’s hours are from 1-4 p.m.

Participants are encouraged to walk, bike or kayak to the parks. Tools, gloves and trash bags will be provided. Kayak demonstrations and lessons also will be offered free of charge. Food, drinks, exercise and fresh air are also readily available, organizers say.

These weekend cleanups are co-sponsored by municipal leadership from Star City and Morgantown, in cooperation with the RiverTown program, WVU’s Adventure West Virginia program, BOPARC and Mon River Trails Conservancy.
