Two West Virginia University College of Education and Human Services alumni were selected to be inducted into the Jasper N. Deahl Honor’s Society, named after one of West Virginia’s greatest educators and first dean of the college.

“Giving Forward in Support of Education” is the mission of the College’s Alumni Association and those chosen exemplify those efforts through career achievement, community service and loyalty to WVU. Inductees are:

Hal Goldberg, Cherry Hill, N.J., M.S. Education, 1976. Goldberg is currently vice president and financial advisor with Royal Bank of Canada Wealth Management. Previously, he was associate vice president and financial advisor with Legg Mason Wood Walker, Inc. In addition to the Royal Bank of Canada, he is a membership director for B’nai Brith International, and a member and supporter of the Lungevity National Foundation in southern New Jersey. Goldberg regularly performs with the Greater South Jersey Chorus, which performs at community and national events, fundraisers, and schools in Philadelphia, Southern New Jersey, and at Carnegie Hall.

Goldberg and his wife Bernice have been life-long supporters of WVU. They are WVU Alumni Association life members and Century Club members. As well as being a member of the new Southern New Jersey WVU Alumni Association, Goldberg is the co-founder of the resurrected WVU Alumni Association Liberty Bell Chapter. He has been an active member of National Alumni Recruiting Network and has represented WVU for many years at college fairs in Southern New Jersey. Goldberg remains a faithful WVU follower, making annual trips during football season as a member of the Mountaineer Athletic Club.

Judith Thomas, West Chester, Pa., Ed.D., 1971. A native of New Kensington, Pa., Thomas recently retired after more than 30 years of distinguished service at Lincoln University. Most recently, she served as the Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Behavioral Studies. Thomas has also served as professor and chair of the Department of Education and interim vice president for enrollment planning and student life. Thomas has been honored for her work around the country, having been quoted, published and presented to many different audiences. Her honors include recognitions from the National Association of Business and Professional Women; the Pennsylvania Black Conference on Higher Education; Edinboro University of Pennsylvania; and Xerox Corporation.

Biographical sketches of Thomas have been published in in “Who’s Who Among American Teachers” and “Who’s Who Among Intellectuals, as well as “Voices: African American and Latina Women in Pennsylvania Share Their Stories of Success” as published by the Pennsylvania Commission for Women to honor 50 Pennsylvania women role models. She is a travelled keynote speaker and regularly serves as a consultant for both basic and higher education topics and sits as chair of the scholarship committee for the Pennsylvania Black Conference on Higher Education. On Sept. 29, the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus will honor Thomas with the C. Dolores Tucker Award, named in honor of a pioneer for women’s rights.
