The West Virginia University Symphonic Band and the WVU Concert Band will present a joint concert at the Creative Arts Center, Wednesday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre. The event is free and open to the public.

All of the faculty and student conductors from the WVU Bands will be conducting on the program, including faculty members Dearl J. Drury, John Hendricks, III, and Christopher J. Nichter, as well as graduate students Johnny Leonard, III, Chelsea Corrao and Jason Brown.

The Symphonic Band has approximately 50 members, comprised mostly of music majors from within the WVU School of Music. Membership is earned through audition. The group performs standard and contemporary wind literature.

The WVU Concert Band is an 85-member ensemble made up of University students who are mostly non-music majors.

Works on the first half of the April 9 program by the WVU Concert Band include: “Ascend” by Samuel R. Hazo; “Amazing Grace,” arranged by William Himes; “Fate of the Gods” by Steven Reineke; “Anitschka” by Johan Nijs; “To the Summit!” by Robert W. Smith; Selections from “Mary Poppins” arranged by Ted Ricketts; “Hebrides Suite” by Clare Grundman; and “Cajun Folk Songs” by Frank Ticheli.

Following intermission, the WVU Symphonic Band will perform the following works: “A Jubilant Overture” by Alfred Reed; “Psalm and Celebration” by Elliot Del Borgo; “Old Scottish Melody (Auld Lang Syne)” arranged by Charles Wiley; “Symphony No. 3” (fourth movement) by Vittorio Giannini; “O Waly, Waly” by Jay Bocook; “Havendance” by David Holsinger; “Salvation is Created” by Tschesnokoff; “Portrait of a Trumpet: by Sammy Nestico; and “Coat of Arms” by George Kenny.
